The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad at grade level, and houses the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives in a utility space, basement, or attic. These are the two main pieces a contractor installs.

The refrigerant line set runs between those two units through the wall, carrying refrigerant back and forth. A thermostat goes on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over the whole system. The contractor also connects the system to the existing ductwork at the air handler.
